THE ANC in KwaZulu-Natal is saddened by the news of the death of Brigadier-General Bafana Cyril Dlamini, who died on Saturday after a long illness.

The provincial secretary of the ANC, Sihle Zikalala, said Dlamini was known as Edwin Ndlovu, his Mkhonto WeSizwe nom de guerrre while in exile.

“He was born in 1936 into a very political inclined family, Zikalala said.

“His father, comrade Steven Dlamini, was a member of the ANC NEC, the president of the South African Congress of Trade Workers — a forerunner of Cosatu — and a member of the central committee of the SACP …” said Zikalala.

Steven Dlamini died in exile in Lusaka.

Zikalala hailed “this dedicated gallant hero of our struggle”.

He said Dlamini’s death “has robbed us a revolutionary and well-respected cadre of our movement. We send our deepest heartfelt condolences to the family …”

He said Dlamini returned to South Africa in 1994 and was a member of the ANC’s military wing that was integrated into the SANDF and was given the rank of brigadier-general.

“He is survived by his wife, a son, three daughters, as well as two sisters and one brother.”

He will be laid to rest on Sunday in Durban.
