KZN ANC stalwart dies

2010-10-07 00:00

THE ANC in KwaZulu-Natal lost one of its powerful leaders in the province with the death of its eThekwini regional chairperson, John Zakhele Mchunu, who was also the party’s KwaZulu-Natal MPL and chairperson of the sports and recreation portfolio committee in the legislature.

Mchunu died early yesterday morning after a short illness, ANC provincial secretary Sihle Zikalala said in a statement.

He was conspicuous by his absence at the NGC and it was later revealed that he had been admitted to the intensive care unit at Crompton hospital in Pinetown.

Reports in newspapers allege that Mchunu obtained millions of rands from tenders issued by the eThekwini Municipality.

Zikalala said Mchunu was originally from Intshiyabantu, Mpendle, but had settled in Clermont in the 1980s because of work.

He served in various positions in the ANC and in trade unions, and was an active member of the South African Communist Party before being elected as a councillor representing a Clermont ward in eThekwini Municipality.

In 2004 he was elected to the KZN Legislature and was a member of some of its committees.

“We dip our revolutionary banner in remembrance of Mchunu and express our heartfelt condolences to the family and relatives … He will always be honoured and remembered by the ANC,” Zikalala said.
