KZN ANCYL to oppose age limit for candidates

2008-03-30 00:00

The ANC Youth League (ANCYL) in KwaZulu-Natal says it will oppose any proposal to disqualify from standing for election as new league president any candidate who may turn 36 while in office.

The ANCYL in Limpopo has confirmed that it will table such a motion at the ANCYL’s 36th elective conference in Mangaung, Free State on Wednesday.

If the proposal is adopted, it will mean that Saki Mofokeng and Songezo Mjongile, both aged 34, will automatically be disqualified. This will leave current Limpopo’s provincial secretary Julius Malema (27) as the sole candidate for the position.

The league constitution states that the membership is open to anyone between the ages of 14 and 35, but makes no mention on what should happen if a leader exceeds the age of 35 while still in office.

Mxolisi Kaunda, the newly-elected chairman of the league in KZN, said both Peter Mokaba and the outgoing Fikile Mbalula are past 36.

The ANCYL in KZN, which will be sending the third largest number of delegates to Mangaung, has already come out in support of Mofokeng, who is also backed by the Free State, Gauteng, North West and the Northern Cape.

Malema is backed by his home province, Limpopo, Mpumalanga and Eastern Cape. Malema also has the backing of the outgoing president, Fikile Mbalula.

Mjongile is only backed by the Western Cape, his home province.

The KZN league said it will back Zweli Mkhize as chairman, Senzo Mchunu as his deputy, Sihle Zikalala as provincial secretary, Peggy Nkonyeni as deputy provincial secretary and Dr Siyabonga Cwele as provincial treasurer.
