KZN Duikers rue their errors, but look forward to Bulls

THE KwaZulu-Natal Duikers were left to reflect on the unforced errors that led to their 25-21 defeat against Western Province in the finals of the SA Amateur Provincial Rugby Competition at Harlequins in Durban at the weekend. However, coach Carel Nel and the team are in a positive mood heading into Saturday’s crunch encounter with the Blue Bulls in Pretoria.

The Duikers side is made up of some of the top club players in KZN, and Nel is head coach of the Maritzburg Collegians first XV, which finished sixth in the Fidelity Security Moor Cup Premier Division.

“It wasn’t a matter of Province beating us, but rather a case of us making too many mistakes on the day. We were on attack most of the game, but due to too many mistakes, poor passes, knock-ons, and some wrong decisions, it cost us in the end. Their three tries came from our defensive errors and not because they were particularly good,” Nel told The Witness yesterday.

“But bar those three mistakes, our defence was very good and I am proud of the boys.”

The nature of the finals is a single round involving the Bulls, WP and the KZN Duikers. Each plays the other once. This is the final Duikers match, while the last match of the competition, which could well decide who wins the title, sees the Bulls travel to play WP next Saturday. The team with the most points in the single-round section will win the title. “It is now a must-win situation for us in Pretoria. If we win with a bonus point, we are still in with a chance,” said Nel.
