THE University of KwaZulu-Natal Impi take on KZN Duikers at 3.30 pm today on the Howard College campus rugby field in Durban in what is a Varsity Shield warm-up game for the students. Impi head coach John Mitchell told Weekend Witness that he was hoping his charges would not try too hard to impress, as was the case at times in the midweek 33-20 defeat to Varsity Cup side Wits University in Harrismith. “We controlled pretty much 70% of the game but were let down by our execution and individualism at times,” said Mitchell. “But it’s not altogether about what we are doing wrong, it’s more about experiential learning and behaviour under pressure,” said the former All Blacks head coach, who added that they were still deciding on who will captain and vice-captain the team, while work had commenced on building a team culture at training on Thursday. “We are looking to bring a higher tempo and intensity to our game against Duikers in an outing that will serve to extend our match fitness,” said Mitchell. A serious blow for the Impi is that highly rated prop Morné Coetzee’s campaign is over before it has even begun after the front-ranker tore an Achilles tendon during the hit-out against Wits. While it is known that Duikers coach Carel Nel has had trouble putting together his side due to players having prior commitments, two of his Maritzburg Collegians players, prop Josh Caruth and loose forward Chris Cousins, as well as PMB Varsity backline player Alex Curry would be in his side.
