KZN Inland beaten twice by EP

KZN Inland were beaten by 13 runs in the Provincial Challenge 40-over against Eastern Province in Despatch yesterday, and went down by 150 runs in the three-dayer that ended at St George’s on Saturday.

EP duly won the Provincial Challenge three-day competition by a country mile after wrapping up the big win over Inland on Saturday.

Inland were in with an even chance of winning the 40-over match yesterday, but three disastrous run-outs in three overs put paid to that.

Opener Mario Olivier made an unbeaten 74, but ran out of partners at the end as the Inland innings imploded around him. Earlier, Inland had done well to fight back after EP put on 104 for the first wicket and looked to be heading for 250-plus, Kyle Nipper bagging four wickets.

Pretoria-born Simon Harmer was a constant thorn in the visitors’ side over the four days with seven scalps for 120 in 50 overs of off-spin in the three-dayer and three for 17 in eight in the one-dayer.

In East London, KZN Coastal won their three-dayer by 69 runs with a day to spare, but Border clinched a two-wicket win with four balls left in the 40-over.

Coastal opener Nashen Govender hit an unbeaten 105. The 19-year-old DHS product, Njabulo Mgenge, who represented SA U19, returned Coastal’s best figures of three for 35.
