KZN Inland dig in against EP on day 2

2011-11-19 00:00

KZN Inland had a much better knock on day two in the Provincial Three-Day Challenge against Eastern Province at Maritzburg Oval yesterday.

EP had compiled a commanding 289 for two on day one and were ready to launch a big total yesterday morning. But Inland stuck to their disciplines and restricted EP to 42 runs for two wickets before the visitors declared their first innings at 331 for four.

Inland’s batting was just as determined as they crafted their first innings with patience and care to reach 106 for two at the close.

Head coach Anton Roux said day two belonged to Inland and he gave Chad Barron, who had come in as a late replacement, a special mention.

Three partnerships laid the foundation for the visitors’ success on day one. EP opening batsman David White put together a maiden first-class hundred, his four-hour knock of 118 coming off 172 balls.

The former Grey High School lad led the way in the 142-run opening stand with Michael Price before Warren Bell took the anchor role.

White’s demise brought captain Michael Smith to the middle and good running with Bell kept the run rate ticking over at a healthy rate.

Barring an alarming collapse, today should see the outcome end in a draw ahead of tomorrow’s T20 bash that stars at 11 am.
