THE KwaZulu-Natal Inland cricket team lead Easterns by 175 runs with nine second innings wickets intact after day two of their CSA Provincial Three-Day Competition match at Willowmoore Park in Benoni yesterday.

Inland resumed their first innings on 326 for six with captain Kyle Nipper 73 not out. The all-rounder went on to an unbeaten 101 before declaring with the total on 386 for seven. In reply, Easterns scored 248 for eight declared in their first innings and at the close Inland were on 37 for one.

Left-hander Nipper (25) scored his third century in first-class cricket in just under three hours, hitting 14 fours off the 121 balls he faced.

Nipper received invaluable support from number nine Tabraiz Shamsi, whose 30 not out enabled an unbroken partnership of 59 for the eighth wicket.

Inland opening bowler Sinethemba Mjekula took a first-class career best six for 37 in 18 overs during Easterns’ 248 for eight declared, with Nipper (two for 27 in 10.5 overs) the only other Inland bowler to get amongst the wickets.

Nic Hendrie and SJ Erwee will resume Inland’s second innings today.

A timeous declaration will give Inland the opportunity to target an outright victory, which would see the Pietermaritzburg-based team achieve their goal of finishing above KZN Coastal on the final three-day log.

The T20 match takes place tomorrow.
