KZN Inland hockey get 100% win record

2010-06-19 00:00

TWO superb penalty corners from captain Tim Guise-Brown and a cracking field goal by Hayden Griffiths led KZN Inland to a 3-0 victory over Southern Gauteng in the final of the SA U16 Boys’ Interprovincial Hockey Tournament at Maritzburg College’s Pape’s Astro yesterday.

Inland went into the break 1-0 up after a neatly executed PC variation saw a trademark Guise-Brown drag flick open the scoring inside 10 minutes. Southerns had their chances, but were unable to convert, and Guise-Brown’s ninth successful PC drag-flick at IPT gave Inland a two-goal cushion before Griffiths buried the Johannesburgers’ hopes two minutes from the end.

Inland were the only unbeaten team and had a 100% win record, which made them fitting winners, earning a second U16 IPT title in succession for their coach, Brandon Swart. KZN Coastal finished fifth.

Five Maritzburg College boys — Okuhle Bhengu, Guise-Brown, Siya Nolutshungu, Jordan Turnbull and Chris van den Berg — made the 30-player SA High Performance squad, with two each from Michaelhouse (Richard Ashforth and Zipho Mhlongo) and Kearsney (Craig Kirsten and Ryan Wallace), plus one from Hilton (Aaron Abbema).

In the SA U16 Girls’ IPT final in Potchefstroom, KZN Coastal were reportedly left to rue missed opportunities as they went down 5-4 to Border in the penalty stroke shootout after the scores had been locked 1-1 at full-time.

Inland ended 10th after losing to Boland 3-1. Lunga Zulu of Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School and Epworth’s Heather McEwan made the SA squad, but no information could be obtained on any other player selections.

Meanwhile, at the U13 Craven Week in Graaff-Reinet, KZN beat Griquas 29-12 after leading 24-12 at half-time.

KZN scored five tries to Griquas’ two, and they came from Brandon Staples, Collin Brunsdon, Henjolah Peters and a Zibusiso Dlomo brace, while Schalk van Wyk kicked two conversions.
