KZN Inland lock horns with Free State

2008-10-22 00:00

AN intriguing encounter takes place at the PMB Oval from today when KZN Inland meet Free State in the SA Airways Provincial Challenge.

Free State coach Rudi Steyn’s side drew with the strong Northerns XI in Pretoria in their first three-day match before winning the one-day clash by 67 runs.

Inland drew their rain-affected three-dayer with Western Province in Bellville and lost the 45-over match by 46 runs.

Garry Hampson was, along with Morne van Vuuren, in outstanding form in the one-dayer but has been left out of the 15-man squad altogether.

Hampson told The Witness yesterday he has a back injury but could play on Sunday.

Coach Sakele Simon’s KZN Coastal open their Pool A account against South Western Districts at Chatsworth Oval from Thursday.

The Proteas’ Hashim Amla makes his return from injury in the one-dayer.

Coastal’s first round against Boland a fortnight ago in Paarl was rescheduled to November 13 to 16 due to incessant preceding rain.

SWD visited Gauteng at the Wanderers and were shaded by one wicket in the three-dayer before losing the 45-over. SWD’s Burton de Wett, Gerhard Strydom, Terence Davis-Taylor and former Wartburg resident Rudi Hillermann shone.

Inland and SWD are the two of six associate unions considered good enough to play the 11 affiliate unions like Free State and KZN Coastal — a worthy achievement.

Meanwhile, convenor of the SA Amateur Cricket selection panel Anton Ferreira named the SAA Challenge XI to meet the touring Bangladesh side in a two-day tour match in Kimberley on November 15 and 16.
