KZN Inland no match for coastal neighbours

THE KZN Inland team played with spirit against KZN Coastals, but it was not enough as a superior opponent came away with an 8-0 victory on the first day of A Section hockey at the South African Women’s Interprovincial Tournament yesterday at Kat Leisure Park in East London.

Jenna Cunliffe scored the first two field goals for Coastals. Then it was skipper Jen Wilson’s turn to trouble the scorekeepers after a flowing move and Kerry Pearton finally netted from a penalty corner for 4-0 at the break.

The in-form Cindy Botha scored twice after the break and Dutchwoman Merel de Blaey hit home another penalty corner for the hatful of eight goals to be complete.

Coastals stuck to their game plan and used their superior speed to create one-on-one situations and also instigated turnovers that Inland were unable to recover from. The Durban side also moved the ball around the park with pace and accuracy, which drew the Inland defence out of their comfort zones and resulted in goalkeeper Megan Woodburn getting through a mountain of work.

Inland coach Craig Haley praised Coastals’s ability to run off the ball and interchange well. “They were also very sharp in picking up on the loose ball and converting out mistakes into opportunities.”

Haley said Inland were also lacking in fitness at times and the lack of experience also took its toll on a side with an average age of 21.

“At time we did show we can play and in the end Coastals were just far better on the day,” he said.

He added that Inland would continue going into matches with the intention to win and won’t get stuck in a defensive mindset.

Inland meet Northern Gauteng Blues today in what promises to be another tough match.
