KZN Inland suffer swift demise against SW Districts

2011-10-04 00:00

KZN Inland went down by 70 runs to South Western Districts (SWD) in their opening Provincial Three-Day Challenge match at the Recreation Ground in Oudtshoorn at the weekend.

In reply to SWD’s commanding 367 for five declared led by Burton de Wett, Inland’s first innings saw them collapse from 254 for four to 297 all out — a collapse that has been typical of the province’s batting travails for quite some time.

Centurions Glen Addicott and Kyle Nipper put on an impressive 167 for the fifth wicket, but thereafter the Inland demise was swift.

After SWD had increased their lead to 283 with little trouble, Inland commendably didn’t play it safe in the seven-per-over run chase, but struck out for victory.

Chad Barron, Addicott and Stefan Myburgh made a go of it, but this was De Wett’s match, as he complemented his fine batting with match figures of nine for 134.

Sunday’s Twenty20 match was abandoned without a ball being bowled.

At Newlands, KZN Coastal delivered a crushing victory by eight wickets over Western Province in the three-dayer but the tables were turned in the T20 when the Capetonians triumphed by 28 runs.
