KZN Inland to defend indoor hockey titles

2013-02-22 00:00

THE KwaZulu-Natal Inland indoor hockey selectors have named competitive provincial teams to contest for top titles in the upcoming U21 and senior interprovincial tournaments.

First up will be the KZN Inland U21 men’s and women’s teams, who will take part in the U21 Festival in Durban on Sunday. Then it’s the turn of the senior KZN Inland men’s and women’s teams to participate in the South African Indoor Hockey Interprovincial Tournament (IPT) from next Thursday to Saturday in Pietermaritzburg.

KZN Inland, the undisputed best indoor hockey province in South Africa, will be defending both the SA men’s and SA women’s titles won in Cape Town last year. The men’s side have the big, burly, underrated striker Gavin Jelly as a wildcard who can create havoc in opposition defences, and he will once again prove to be a handful for his markers, allowing team-mates to exploit the spaces.

Meanwhile, the University of KZN Hockey Club’s mini-hockey and academy hockey programmes are building their numbers of young participants.

Situated at UKZNHC’s clubhouse and splendid Greenfields hockey turf in the Peter Booysen Sports Park off Golf Road in Scottsville, the mini-hockey and academy programmes began three years ago and have grown further in the new 2013 season.

Schoolchildren from the ages of six to 12 are in the mini-hockey programme, with boys and girls from age 12 to 18 in the academy hockey programme under the guidance of experienced, accredited coaches led by UKZN head coach Fabian Gregory, who is the current Investec South African women’s hockey team assistant coach.
