KZN Inland’s batters hand Highveld Strikers the game on an oval platter

THE Highveld Strikers received an early Christmas present when KZN Inland effectively committed suicide in their 90-run Provincial 40-Over Challenge defeat at the Maritzburg Oval Sunday.

Man-of-the-match Johnson Mafa and spinner Richard das Neves bowled terrific opening spells that destroyed Inland’s top order, the home side chasing a gettable 244 for victory.

There was brief hope when Conway and Mbasa Gqadushe hammered 64 in six overs — and the 20 overs left for 120 runs to win was gettable — but both were victims of soft dismissals when the situation called for sober reassessment after they had got their side back on track with a flurry of superb shots.

The very talented Conway in particular could have played a match-winning knock, as he had done all the hard work, survived an agonising blow amidships from Mafa and still had useful batters right down to number 11 who could have stayed with him long enough.

To be fair, though, a host of Inland batsmen got themselves out in a batting display they will want to forget.

After the Strikers elected to take first knock, Inland were very good in the field in the face of a strong batting order, and Kimeshan Chetty’s spell at the death, with the fast bowler gingerly making his return after serious injury, was heartening.

But such was their dominance that Strikers earned a bonus point for the victory.

Meanwhile, the weather-marred three-day match, which Inland dominated from the outset, was drawn on Saturday with last season’s runners-up the Strikers 62 for one chasing 349 for victory.

It was a great pity that so many overs were lost on days two and three, as Inland might have chalked up another fantastic victory akin to their win against top side Northerns a fortnight ago.

Inland lead the three-day log with 26.9 points after two matches, with KZN Coastal second. Inland meet Western Province at Newlands in two weeks’ time.
