KZN: MPLs unanimous on curbing rhino poaching

2012-10-26 00:00

KWAZULU-NATAL MPLs made a unanimous call yesterday for the government to invest more money in the fight against rhino poaching before the species becomes extinct.

IFP MPL Henry Combrinck said it was a miracle that rhinos still exist in the face of the onslaught. “It is estimated that up to 650 animals may die this year at the hands of poachers. We should request that our Honourable MEC [of Agriculture, Meshack Radebe] make more funds available to fight this plague,” said Combrinck.

ANC MPL Omi Singh said the investment was needed as it turned out that poaching syndicates were more sophisticated than the rangers. “If this is not arrested soon, the world will lose the rhino species.”

DA MPL Radley Keys pointed out that it was disturbing to learn that rangers were also implicated in poaching.

Statistics indicate that 456 rhinos have been poached around the country this year, while 207 people have been arrested.
