KZN: Mother and child among Three killed in road crashes

2013-03-11 00:00

THREE people, including a mother and child, died and others were seriously injured in separate motor accidents in KwaZulu-Natal at the weekend.

At 10 pm on Saturday, a mother and her five-year-old child died and two other people sustained serious injuries after a bakkie rear-ended a car that had broken down on the N2 northbound past the M7.

When paramedics arrived on the scene, they found the car in the left-hand lane of the freeway with extensive damage to the rear end. The mother and child were found dead in the back seat.

The local fire department used the jaws of life to extricate the driver, who was taken to hospital.

A passenger in the car had suspected neck and back injuries and was stabilised at the scene.

The bakkie was found in the right-hand lane of the N2 southbound. Its driver was shaken but uninjured, said Derrick Banks of ER24.

On the R103 between Estcourt and Colenso on Saturday morning, a truck driver burnt to death and another truck driver is in a critical condition, while his passenger sustained minor injuries, following a head-on collision.
