KZN: ‘No mercy for sex crimes’

2013-04-09 00:00

POLICE arrested 99 people for sex-related offences during the Easter holiday, and 12 of them have so far been successfully prosecuted.

Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said yesterday that various Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Units (FCS) in the province made the arrests from crimes that were reported from Good Friday (March 29).

“Twelve of these cases were successfully finalised in different courts and the courts handed down four life imprisonments to the accused [in some cases] and a total of 97 years’ imprisonment in the remaining cases,” said Zwane.

He said that four people were arrested for cases that involved victims over the age of 50.

“These cases were reported at Plessislaer, Camperdown, Jozini and Madadeni areas,” he said.

Provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni said the arrests sent a “clear message to like-minded would-be offenders” that the police will find them.
