KZN Rhino Watch: Contributions near R1 million

2012-11-15 00:00

KZN Rhino Watch was launched just seven weeks ago and funds are already fast approaching the R1 million mark. Donations and pledges are sitting at R908 202.

Over the past week, a nine-year-old boy has donated the R1 000 his parents were to spend on throwing him a birthday party; the money raised at a car run from Ballito to Durban by KZN Car Fanatics — all R12 000 of it — has come in; while the Village Veterinary Clinic in Kloof has also come to the party in a big way.

They’ve raised R6 820 for KZN Rhino Watch after holding a series of weekly raffles of bags of cat and dog food during the month of October. Their clients generously supported them.

One helicopter is already patrolling Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park. Since it was deployed there by East Coast Radio, under the banner of KZN Rhino Watch, only one poaching incident has taken place.

The long weekend before that, several were poached.

Meanwhile, in Howick, renowned local sculptor Allen Hallett — in conjunction with Howick Pick n Pay Family Store — will be raffling a limited edition bronze rhino sculpture (pictured above).

This particular white rhino sculpture came into being because of Allen’s strong connection to African wildlife and especially Zululand, where he was a game ranger in the 1970s.

He says this is his way of contributing towards keeping the chopper in the air.

The raffle will run from November 15 through to December 10, when the draw will take place.
