KZN Spars back epic charity run

2008-03-12 00:00

A combined effort by Spar KZN and Spar retailers throughout KZN has resulted in a R170 600 donation to the Cipla Miles for Smiles Foundation.

Spar’s fundraising drive was sparked by a talk Cipla Miles for Smiles Foundation runner David Grier gave to retailers in January about his and running partner Braam Malherbe’s historical run along the length of the Great Wall of China at the end of 2006.

The pair’s 3 518, 61-km run formed the inaugural initiative by local pharmaceutical company Cipla Medpro’s non-profit social responsibility programme, the Cipla Miles for Smiles Foundation, wherein it challenged extreme athletes Grier and Malherbe to conquer the ultimate endurance test, while achieving a world first.

The mission involved measuring the wall using GPS equipment and also raising enough money (R550 000) for the organisation to perform 55 reconstructive facial surgeries on underprivileged SA children born with cleft lips and /or palates.

This year, Malherbe and Grier plan to run 3 500 km around the South African coastline up into Mozambique. Spar KZN’s Rob Philipson said he is thrilled to hand over the money to the foundation as part of their fundraising for more surgeries.
