KZN U19 golfers set for premier division

2014-12-19 00:00

KWAZULU-NATAL’S top U19 golfers are on the verge of being promoted into the A league of the South African U19 interprovincial golf tournament under way in Krugersdorp.

After a week of action, the KZN side are set to play their final two matches today and are firmly in the driving seat for promotion to the premier division next year.

Having a bye yesterday, the team rested ahead of their final push, where they are set to play Eastern Province in foursomes and singles games.

The matches promise to be highly competitive, as EP (seven points) sit in second place (seven points) on the B division log behind KZN (10 points), with only three points separating them. Boland also pose a threat, sitting in third place with six points.

“It is going to be a big day, EP were in the A division last year and are working hard to regain their spot, so we will have to do our best,” said KZN assistant team manager Joseph Kunene.

“We are confident about our promotion after a good week. We have been in the top league before but were relegated two years ago,” Kunene told The Witness.

KZN sit on top of the table after winning all of their five matches and Kunene said the team were in high spirits after midweek wins.

In Wednesday’s action, the coastal side beat Mpumalanga 9,5-2,5. They led 3-1 in foursomes but tied the singles with a win and two halves. They followed that up with a 7-5 Singles win over Boland.

Meanwhile, EP beat North West 7-5 to keep their promotion hopes alive.

The KZN U19 team are drawn from the top eight golfers after a number of provincial tournaments throughout the year.

With the players coming from all corners of the province, preparation time was short before the U19 tournament. The KZN golfers only trained together three times before beginning their quest for promotion.

“Most of the players know each other from competitions and they came together as a team quite easily,” said Kunene.

Winning today’s game will secure KZN’s place in next year’s U19 interprovincial tournament.
