KWAZULU-NATAL artists enjoyed the lion’s share of success at this year’s 19th MTN South African Music Awards (Samas) at Sun City at the weekend.

Toya Delazy, whose grandfather is Chief Mangosuthu Buthelezi, took home the prizes for newcomer of the year and best pop album for her debut album Due Drop Deluxe, and Jax Panik received the gong for best producer for his work on Delazy’s album.

The singer, who opened this year’s show singing her hit single Love Is in the Air in collaboration with rapper Reason, paid tribute to her fans at the ceremony.

She said: “Salute, I just want to say thanks to God, my mother, my whole team, my family and especially my fans — thanks to you for letting me do rad stuff.

“Thank you South Africa for loving good music.”

Another KZN performer celebrating success was Mkhonzeni “Professor” Langa, winner of the best kwaito album for The Orientation.

Durban’s DJ Black Coffee was the winner of the best dance album for Africa Rising.

Soul Brothers, who are originally from KZN, took home the prize for best traditional album for Siphithiphithi, and Ichwane Lebhaca, of Ixopo, was the winner of the award for best maskandi album for Inkunzi Yomthakathi.

Gospel fans were thrilled when Umlazi-born diva Ntokozo Mbambo took home the prize for best contemporary faith music album for Filled, and Sfiso Ncwane, of Port Shepstone, won the MTN record of the year prize for Kulungile Baba.

An emotional Ncwane told fans he couldn’t wait to bring his trophy home to the South Coast.

Meanwhile, Mbambo posted on her Facebook page: “What an amazing weekend I had at the MTN SAMAs … God is just amazing! … My highlight of the night had to be seeing my brother Sfiso Ncwane taking record of the year. Our God is just that good!”

Earlier in the evening, Ncwane wowed the Sama crowd with a live performance featuring the Mzansi Youth Choir. The choir then went on to share the stage with Umlazi’s Khaya Mthethwa and Idols host Proverb for a performance of Khaya’s hit single Move.

The Idols 2012 winner, who took home his first Sama for best R&B/soul/reggae album for his debut album For You, tweeted to fans on Saturday: “My friend @ntokozombambo and I just won our first Sama’s!!!”

Another big winner was hip hop star Khuli Chana. The former Motswako protégé took home best male artist, best rap album and album of the year awards for Lost in Time.

Other winners were Kelly Khumalo (female artist of the year for The Past, The Present, The Future), Zebra and Giraffe (best rock album for The Wisest Ones) and Elvis Blue (best adult contemporary album for Journey). Freshlyground won best duo/group for Take Me to the Dance, and iScream & The Chocolate Stix the best alternative album for The Paradox.

Three legendary SA musicians — the late Johannes Kerkorrel, Sizwe Zako and Dr Thomas Chauke — received lifetime achievement awards.

The ceremony also featured a number of show-stopping performances, including one by Lira that started with the singer surrounded by waving fabric and ended with her wearing skin-tight leather pants and sculpted gold corset.

There was also a medley of songs by the finalists in the album of the year category — Maleh, Khuli Chana, Mbambo, The Muffinz and Khumalo, who arrived on stage on a stretcher carried by four men.

Another “wow” moment was delivered by multi-nominee Chianosky, who sang Act Like a Man from her debut album Hungry.

It was a massive week for the 19-year-old, who also opened for Justin Bieber at his concerts in Cape Town and Johannesburg.
