KZN club rugby resumes this weekend

WITH KwaZulu-Natal premier-division rugby having taken a break last weekend due to the King’s Park Test match, the action resumes this weekend, with the focus in Pietermaritzburg on PMB Collegians’ clash against Zululand Rhinos at 3 pm in Woodburn Stadium tomorrow.

PMB Varsity is away to Crusaders at Ranleigh Crescent in Durban North, at 3 pm tomorrow in the Fidelity Security feature game. Another intriguing tussle will be the Old Boys/College Rovers derby at 8 pm tonight at the Riverside Sports Club rugby pitch.

In KZN first-division south, PMB Waratahs travel to Port Shepstone to tackle South Coast Warriors at 3 pm tomorrow.

Meanwhile, with the schools breaking up for the July holidays next week, rugby fans in the KZN capital can look forward to a bumper day of club rugby at Woodburn next Saturday, when a host of teams take to the field in a fundraising event in aid of buying a new generator for the stadium.

The highlight of next Saturday’s eight matches at Woodburn will be the return of the Pietermaritzburg Derby Cup match between PMB Varsity and PMB Collegians at 3 pm.

Anyone who was at the first Derby Cup clash between Pietermaritzburg’s top two teams earlier this season, won by Varsity after a titanic contest, will agree that this clash is not to be missed.

After the rugby, a beer tent at Woodburn will be the venue for the screening of the Springboks versus England third Test in Port Elizabeth, and lucky-draw prizes, courtesy of Husqvarna, will be handed out. During the day, there will also be music and fun events for children.

Clubs taking part in the eight matches that kick off at 1.30 pm are Varsity, Collegians, PMB Waratahs, Jaguars, Midlands U20, Crusaders U20, Voortrekker Old Boys, Nagle Dam Rhinos, Howick Eagles and Cedara.

“As this is a fundraising endeavour, an entrance fee of R10 per person will be charged, and we urge rugby supporters to contribute to this worthy cause,” said Midlands Rugby Sub-Union president Piet Herbst.

Entrance to Woodburn next Saturday is only from the Woodhouse Road side, due to the road works in Boshoff Street.

Meanwhile, former Natal coach Koos Beukes has died. He will be sorely missed by the province’s rugby fraternity.
