KZN coast: Sardines ‘have arrived’

2008-06-10 00:00

The sardines have arrived.

Natal Sharks Board’s sardine expert Mike Anderson-Reade said that the first batch of this season’s sardines were spotted off the Wild Coast Sun complex and extended southwards to just north of Port St John’s.

“Long lines of sardine were visible in the midbreak and backline areas being fed upon by dolphins and Cape gannets. A large number of sharks were also observed amongst the shoals,” he said.

“Fish are moving relatively slowly, however, predator pressure will get them onto the the KZN coast probably as early as this afternoon,” he said.

More sardine activity can be spotted on the lower south coast today.

Anderson-Readesaid said that shark nets from Hibberdene to Port Edward have been removed and there is discretionary bathing only in that area.
