KZN cricket derby: Coastal too good for Inland

2011-02-14 00:00

CAPTAIN Kyle Nipper’s KZN Inland line-up were outplayed by Khaya Zondo’s KZN Coastal XI to the tune of 70 runs in the Provincial Challenge 40-over match at the Maritzburg Oval yesterday.

Coastal amassed 267 for eight in their 40 overs with the in-form Abdul Haq Razak and Matthew Hulett hitting punishing half-centuries.

In reply, Inland held on to a glimmer of hope while Nipper and the two teenagers just out of Maritzburg College, Tyler Lortan and Nic Hendrie, were at the crease.

However, the side never fully recovered from the rough decision meted out to opener Glen Addicott.

Inland fell for 192 in 35 overs as they bravely looked to keep up with the formidable run rate.

For Coastal, Hulett hit 59 off 38 balls including six fours and two sixes, while Razak smashed an unbeaten 66 off just 35 deliveries that included five fours and three sixes.

The only Inland bowler who went for under five per over was seamer Narvaar Harridave. For Inland, Nipper gave hope in the form of 46 off 38 balls. He batted seven fours and a six. Inland’s young Lortan stroked 52 off 80 deliveries with four fours, while team-mate Hendrie’s 32 came off 26 balls and included three fours and two maximums.

The pick of Coastal’s bowlers was seamer Viyash Gobind with three for 30 in seven.

The three-dayer that ended Saturday saw Inland mount a brave fightback after being asked to follow on.

Addicott hit a sixth first-class ton to go with his first innings 80 and Nipper batting resolutely to be just 10 short of what would have been his second ton at this level.

The match ended drawn after Coastal has made a real go of chasing down the winning target.

Indeed, bad light prevented the match from having a very interesting outcome, as Inland were still in with a shout, opening bowler Brady Barends having taken four for 27 in 12.

Next up, Inland travel to Willomoore Park in Benoni where they will meet Easterns from Thursday to Sunday.
