KZN derby first up at men’s hockey IPT

2010-08-24 00:00

THE business end of the Men’s Inter Provincial Hockey Tournament begins at the KC March Stadium in the Port Elizabeth suburb of Gelvandale today and first up in the A Section are defending champions KZN Coastals Raiders and KZN Inland.

This is followed by Western Province against WP Peninsula, Northerns versus Border and Kaspersky Southerns against Eastern Province in the late game at 5.30 pm.

Pool A in the top eight A Section consists of Coastals, Inland, Northerns and Border, while the Pool B fight will be between Southerns, Western Province, Eastern Province and WP Peninsula.

Inland meet Border tomorrow and Northerns on Thursday.

Southerns have secured the biggest provincial sponsorship in SA hockey history thanks to Russian-based Internet security specialists Kaspersky, and they look to be the side to beat in Port Elizabeth.

Inland came within a whisker of destroying Coastals’ title aspirations in their pool match last year at the AB Jackson Greenfields Turf and the significance of today’s match is likely to be no different, as the other serious Pool A contender for a top-two berth and hence a place in the semi-finals is a good-looking Northerns squad.

Both sides are liberally sprinkled with national players and the men Inland will have to watch out for are flicker Gareth Carr, fellow defender Lloyd Madsen, midfielders Taine and Wade Paton as well as Tim Drummond, and forwards Marvin Harper and Lloyd Norris-Jones.

With three pool matches there’s no room for slip-ups before the cross-pool play-offs on Friday, and Saturday’s final classification matches, which include the 4 pm title match.

Meanwhile, in the B Section (second division) yesterday there were big wins for Wits and KZN Mynahs.

Eastern Province Settlers were made to work hard by SA Country Districts for their 1-0 win, while North West were good value for their 3-0 victory over a useful Free State line-up. Wits demolished Southern Cape 11-0.

Wits and the North West combination look the teams to beat in the B Section.

KZN Mynahs 7 Mpumalanga 1; Witwatersrand 11 Southern Cape 0; North West 3 Free State 0; Eastern Province Settlers 1 SA Country Districts 0.
