KZN: education department has 2?000 vacant posts

2012-12-13 00:00

MORE than 220 schools in KwaZulu-Natal have no principals.

This was disclosed recently in a parliamentary reply by the provincial Education Department to Democratic Alliance MP Tom Stokes.

The DA had asked the department to give it a list of vacant posts in each district.

In a written response, the department’s head, Dr Nkosinathi Sishi, said there were 2 015 promotion-based posts that were vacant, including 576 principals, deputy principals and heads of department.

These did not include teachers’ posts.

The department said the posts had been advertised and would be filled in January.

Stokes said the delay to fill the posts was “unacceptable” and alleged there was “serious mismanagement”.

“It is also indicative of a complete lack of urgency and zeal within the provincial Education Department’s human resources department,” Stokes added.

Spokesperson Sihle Mlotshwa said the department had noted the DA’s statement.

In September, the department advertised 894 school-based promotion vacancies, which included 225 school principals, 300 deputy principals and heads of departments.

Sishi said the department was aiming to ensure that there was no lag between resignations or retirements and appointments.

“We are doing this so that on the last day the official leaves work, there is somebody to start working even on the same day, this applies even to office-based officials,” Sishi said.
