KZN face Bulls at Craven Week

2011-06-25 00:00

THE schools winter vacation heralds the junior inter-provincial rugby tournaments in various age groups. The KZN junior rugby sides have been practising each week since they were announced.

On June 16 the Craven, Grant Khomo and Academy sides all played equivalent sides from the Pumas. Today in Pretoria the U18 Craven week sides from KZN and the Blue Bulls face one another in a preparation match on the Central Unions Bondedag. After they beat the Pumas fairly comfortably, today’s game will be a tough assignment.

Affies have four players in the Bulls squad, with another 14 from Waterkloof, both teams with huge packs and fast backs.

On the first day of Craven week on July 11, the KZN team face Western Province and if they can get through these two matches unbeaten they could well be set up to play in the final game.

Both the junior Craven and Academy weeks begin on Monday. The U13 Craven week is being based at Affies in Pretoria and KZN will play their first match against the Lions.

The Academy week is being held at the University of Johannesburg. The two KZN teams should have reasonably easy games.

The Academy B side play the Leopards from Potchefstroom and the A play have a repeat match against the Pumas. At Glenwood 10 days ago the Academy A played some good rugby in defeating the Pumas 36-10.

The U16 Grant Khomo week will be in Queenstown, based at Queens College, from July 4. The promising KZN side play their first match against South Western Districts.
