KZN family historian receives highest honour

LOCAL historian Shelagh Spencer has been named as a fellow of the Genealogical Society of South Africa, the highest honour that can be bestowed on a member of the society.

Last year Spencer was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of KwaZulu-Natal in recognition of her work documenting English emigrants to Natal in the nineteenth century. This was largely in recognition of her British Settlers in Natal. A Biographical Register, 1824-1857 which now extends to seven volumes.

At a recent meeting of the Pietermaritzburg Family History Society Spencer was also presented with honorary membership of the society.
