KZN farmer shoots and kills intruder

A FARMER in the KwaZulu-Natal midlands shot dead an intruder on his farm after responding to his wife’s cries for help, police said yesterday.

Police have not named either the couple or the dead man at this stage pending further investigations into the circumstances of the shooting.

The Witness yesterday contacted the farmer, but he did not want to comment on the incident.

Senior Superintendent Henry Budhram said in a press statement police were called to the farm, which is situated along the old Wartburg Road, at about 11 pm on Saturday. They found the body of a 22-year-old man who had been shot in the head.

They were told that, as the farmer’s wife arrived home earlier that night and was closing the main gate, she was accosted by the intruder who grabbed her by her shirt.

The woman screamed for help and her 47-year-old husband heard her cries from inside the house and went to investigate.

He was allegedly confronted by the intruder, produced his firearm and fired three shots, killing the man.

Reacting to news about the incident, Koos Marais of the security desk at the KwaZulu-Natal Agricultural Union, said Kwanalu is very concerned about the ease with which attacks occur on farms, and said people living in rural areas are very vulnerable.

“Any person who comes under attack should be entitled to protect themselves.

“We expect that justice will take its course in this case,” he said.
