His announcement in the legislature was followed by Health MEC Peggy Nkonyeni presenting her six-month service delivery report in which she said two new MDR satellite TB centres have been opened and 119 health care workers trained in MDR TB management.

On the HIV/Aids front, Nkonyeni said more than 110 000 patients have been put on anti-retroviral treatment since the start of the programme in 2004. She added that HIV/Aids remains a top priority of the government because with a 16,5% prevalence in KZN, the province still remains the highest in the country.

She said recent statistics have indicated that the district of Amajuba has the highest incidences of HIV/Aids, at 46% (the national average is 29,1%).

Nkonyeni said this was why the KZN government will be commemorating World Aids Day on December 1 in Newcastle in the Amajuba district.
