KZN girls set their sights on international archery glory

2015-04-29 00:00

WITH taut bows and a target in sight, two KZN girls will be flying to the U.S. for an international archery championship.

Pietermaritzburg’s Emily O’Neill (16) and Durban’s Devanique Rossouw (16) are training intensively with hopes of bringing home medals from the Youth World Archery Championships in June.

The competition, held in South Dakota, will see the world’s best athletes compete in a duel of precision and perseverance.

Emily, who goes to St John’s Diocesan School for Girls, said she has been an archer for a decade and is very excited to take part internationally.

Devanique, who has competed twice before, said the competition is both mentally and physically challenging but she is hopeful they will both place well.

The girls agreed that although the sport needs to grow more in the country, there is already a high standard of archers who compete nationally in South Africa.

Emily’s coach and father, James, said he has “total confidence” in the girls’ capabilities and is sure they will be successful in the championships.
