KZN health adopts McCord

2013-01-31 00:00

KWAZULU-NATAL Health MEC Sibongiseni Dhlomo said yesterday his department would take over the running and management of the McCord Hospital in Durban.

“The McCord Hospital will not be closed.

“The board and management of the McCord Hospital accepted the offer from the Department of Health to take over the healthcare services at McCord Hospital,” Dhlomo said.

He made the announcement after a meeting between the department and the hospital on Tuesday following reports about the possible closure of the hospital, which experienced financial problems when it failed to get funding from the department for the next financial year.

The hospital’s woes started when its foreign funding dried up last year.

The department had previously indicated it would n ome to the rescue of the hospital, demanding it account for a R70 million grant it gave for training and rendering of healthcare services.

The department had also complained about not receiving services when the hospital closed its Sinikithemba HIV-Aids clinic.

But since last week, the department and the hospital board have been in talks to find solutions for the future of the hospital.

Dhlomo blamed the situation the hospital had found itself in on limited government funding and the drying up of international funding.

“We have no evidence that suggests that there might have been financial mismanagement by McCord Hospital,” he said.
