KZN mops up after storm

AT LEAST one death has been recorded near Nongoma after severe weekend thunderstorms ravaged parts of the province.

Nongoma Municipality municipal manager Bonga Ntanzi, said it is believed one person died as a result of lightning.

The municipality, along with the Zululand District Municipality and officials from the provincial Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, are currently carrying out an assessment in the region.

Department MEC Nomusa Dube said in a statement “our teams have been dispatched to all the affected areas so that we can provide rescue and clean-up services to our vulnerable communities”. Other problem areas in northern KwaZulu-Natal include Nqutu, where three people were reported missing. They are believed to have been swept away by the Ngchibide River.
