KZN: record number of guns destroyed

2010-12-15 00:00

THE police yesterday destroyed 17 857 firearms at Reclamation Group Site, Prospecton, in Durban in what spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker called “the single largest destruction of firearms” in KwaZulu-Natal”.

The firearms were seized by the police or surrendered voluntarily.

“Communities in this province can feel safer knowing that they will be spared of the possibility of being intimidated, robbed or killed by these firearms,” said Naicker. “Of the 17 857 firearms that were to be destroyed yesterday, 10 321 were legal firearms surrendered by their owners and 1 512 were illegal firearms surrendered during the firearm amnesty period early this year.

“The remaining 6 024 were firearms seized by police during operations and investigations.

He said one of the key activities of the police this festive season is to seize as many illegal firearms as possible.
