KZN river racing season begins

THE KwaZulu-Natal River racing season for 2009 to 2010 gets under way this weekend with the first of two Alexander Caruth races on the Upper Umgeni.

Hosts, Umzinyathi Canoe Club from Shongweni Dam, have pulled out all the stops for this race designed with the river novice and family in mind. Racing will begin at 10 am instead of 9 am to avoid the early morning chill and covers the ever-popular 16-kilometre C Class section from Albert Falls weir to the old Baynes Drift bridge.

As well as a full complement of race prizes, there is a lucky draw split paddle on offer to all entrants, as well as spot prizes including the best K1 and K2 “wipe-out” at the weir. There will also be a prize for the club and school with the most entrants who finish the race. Pronto coffee and bacon-and-egg rolls will be available at the start and full catering at the finish, with a jumping castle for the smaller children.

There will be a guppy race from “gum trees” to the finish, starting at around noon, with final details announced at the start and finish of the main race in the morning. Guppy race entry is free, but finishers will count towards the schools prize. KNCU are currently embarking on a dual club/school recognition system at all races for schools that do not have independent club structures.
