KZN road death toll hits 30 in six days

2009-09-11 00:00

THREE people died in two accidents yesterday, bringing the death toll on KwaZulu-Natal roads to 30 in six days.

On the R33 turn-off to Wartburg, a pedestrian and the driver were killed in an accident involving an Isuzu bakkie.

On the R103 near Estcourt, the driver of a panel van lost control and the vehicle overturned, killing one person and leaving three in a critical condition.

Transport MEC Willies Mchunu said he has been taken aback by the accidents.

“Our Road Traffic Inspectorate officers are working around the clock to enforce traffic laws and to ensure the safety of all road users,” said Mchunu.

Meanwhile, a drunk driver who was caught in Camperdown last month and found to have been nine times over the legal limit was found guilty and fined R10 000 yesterday.
