KZN has a finalist in the 14th edition of the Shoprite Checkers Women of the Year Award.

Ednah Zulu, the first principal of the Ngqengelele High School in Mahlabathini, near Ulundi, was selected from hundreds of entries in the award’s Educators category.

She is described as “a courageous woman who took up a challenge to transform a one-classroom teaching facility into a high school that is awarded year after year for its matric pass rate and excellence”.

The award describes how Zulu drove the creation of a school with 10 classrooms, proper toilet facilities and an administration block. The school achieved outstanding results in the national matric examinations with an overall pass rate that varies between 70% and 80%.”

Nominations for the awards closed on April 29 and a comprehensive panel has identified three finalists in each of the five award categories. The public will soon be able to vote by sms or on the award’s website for the woman who they believe to be the most deserving of winning the Award.

Public votes will account for 30% of the final score, although the judges’ decision.

The winners will be awarded with individual prize money while the group will also give R100 000 towards the work of these winners.

Winners will be announced at a gala evening this month at Emperors Palace in Gauteng.
