KZN schoolboy teams selected

2013-05-25 00:00

FOUR squads were chosen, after the final trial was held last Tuesday, to represent the province in rugby tournaments in July. The U18 squads have been grouped into forwards and backs, allowing the coaches to select the best combinations for the day, at either Craven Week or Academy week. The final list of 22 will follow after the first practice. The U16 Grant Khomo team has been named in positions.

Glenwood dominate the U18 and U16 selections, with 18 of the 44 senior players, and nine of the 22 at U16 level. Maritzburg College has 10 players in the two U18 teams, with four in the Craven Week team. Kearsney has eight, of which six are in the Craven squad.

The capping ceremony will be held on June 12 at King’s Park.

This is KZN’s first Country Districts team, which replaces the Academy B team and provides a better chance for youngsters from the smaller rural schools.

Both the Craven Week and Academy squads have experience in their midst. The Du Preez brothers, Jean-Luc and Daniel from Kearsney, were selected for SA Schools last year, and with Glenwood’s Corné Vermaak, are playing in their second Craven Week. Sphamandla Ngcobo and Akhona Nela from Glenwood, with Banela Ngwenya from College, and Ayron Schramm from Kearsney, played in the Academy Week in 2012. Three players played in the Grant Khomo week last year: Koos Tredoux and Morné Joubert from Glenwood, and Kurt Webster from DHS. Tredoux was in the Bulls U16 side. Joubert and Webster were also selected for the SA U16 High Performance squad.

The Academy team has Vuyo Khatide from College, who made the Craven Week team last year, and three players who will be at their second Academy Week: Kelvin Elder from College, Brad Ellse from Westville and Nqobi Maseko from Hilton.
