KZN schools aiming for final glory

2013-06-08 00:00

OTHER than Glenwood and Maritzburg College, both of which will be playing next term, KZN schools only have two more Saturdays before the hockey season ends.

There have been a number of midweek matches but today many will be following Northwood to see if they can finish the season in style.

Today, Northwood will host Glenwood and the latter have also had one of their best seasons. Both schools have lost just one game against KZN schools — Maritzburg College.

Glenwood have also lost against Paul Roos and drawn with Michaelhouse and Rondebosch. Northwood have not lost any other matches and they have also drawn against Rondebosch as well as Pretoria BHS.

Glenwood will be hoping to play well today to lower Northwood’s status, but this will be a difficult task as the Northwood side have some talented players making up a well-balanced unit, both on attack and in defence. Glenwood are arguably stronger on attack than they are in defence and this could be the difference between the two teams with Northwood likely to score more easily.

A second match that will likely be closely contested is on Aitkens at Michaelhouse, where they will host St Charles.

The visitors have been improving over the season and they are known as fighters as they will not give up.

Michaelhouse have played some good hockey but then let themselves down with some inconsistent play. This morning they will need to be close to their best to prevent the Maritzburg side from causing an upset.

The only other match today is hosted by DHS on their Founders Day, when they play Hilton. Will the DHS Old Boys be able to raise their game, because they will need to if they wish to win this morning.

Hilton will be attempting to wash the disappointing loss from last Saturday from their memories with a convincing win today.

This will give them some confidence to finish the season on a winning note.

Fixtures in brief: Northwood vs Glenwood;

Michaelhouse vs St Charles; DHS vs Hilton; Westville vs Old Boys; Clifton vs Treverton (played yesterday).
