KZN sides blow hot and cold

2011-06-30 00:00

THE first two days of the Junior Craven week, for U13 players in Pretoria and U18 players at the Academy week in Johannesburg, have seen the KZN teams returning a mixed set of results.

It was a disappointing game for the senior Craven week side last Saturday at the Central Unions Bondedag held in Rustenburg.

The KZN U13 side started with a narrow victory against the Golden Lions, winning 10-8. Subsequently the Lions have beaten the Bulls. In their second game the KZN side lost against Eastern Province 5-11.

At the Academy week, Monday was a good start for KZN, although the A team beat the Pumas 27-24. The Pumas had stepped up their intensity after losing 10 days earlier by 26 points against KZN at Glenwood. Did the KZN side go into the game again thinking that it was going to be easy?

The B team had a good win against the Leopards 26-19.

On Tuesday the Academy A played Free State — always a strong side — and they lost 13-19. The B team lost13-27 to Boland.

In today’s last day the A team have been pitted against South Western Districts, who drew earlier with Free State and the B side will play the Griffons.

Last Saturday the very talented Bulls Craven week team mauled the KZN side 36-3 in Rustenburg.

It is probably unfair to write the KZN lads off as they had to travel to Rustenburg and had two of the stars in their side injured — scrum- half and captain Stefan Ungerer and flank Jean-Luc du Preez. Both will be fit for Craven week.
