KZN stars

2007-12-20 00:00

Catherine Berning was the KZN star at the recent South African Junior Championships held at Durban Shongweni Club. Berning was a team member in no fewer than four teams and she took the South African Junior Individual Dressage Championship riding the elegant grey Dutch warmblood Ardmore Livius.

Berning has dedicated her life to riding and has been a top rider throughout her child and junior career, representing KZN many times since she was an eight-year-old. She has had loyal parental support and deserves all her accolades.

The KZN Junior Dressage Team of Dominque Tardin, D. Mattioda, Catherine Berning and Bronwyn Taylor also won the team title.

Another KZN star was Hilton’s Bronwyn Taylor who rode brilliantly in the Individual Equitation to be the Reserve Champion.

The KZN Equitation team did well to end in second place behind Gauteng. Sarah Hulley and Magson rode into second place in the Eventing Championships with Waterside Stardust ridden by Meg Hodgson in third place.

The Eventing team championship was also won by KZN. The Showing team championship was won by the Eastern Cape. This team has some superb horses and all rode well to be the deserved champions.

The individual Junior Showing Champion was King to Conquer from Gauteng ridden by Anthea Michaletos. The KZN team did not have the best of days in the Team championship which was eventually won by Gauteng with the Western Province in second place.

• Bomber’s Equestrian Equipment held a cocktail evening to mark the opening of their new premises in Victoria Road. This specialist bit manufacturer has achieved international acclaim and it was encouraging to see his European associates at the opening. They had come to support Bomber Nel as they have entered into an agreement with him to supply bits on a regular basis with shipments leaving every two weeks for Europe. The bits are made from totally South African components using South African labour. The Europeans have chosen Nel as their preferred supplier because the quality is excellent due to the bits being handmade rather than cast, which is what the English and Chinese manufacturers are producing.

• The Rowe-Setz family are holding a Christmas Eve ride in the beautiful Dargle followed by lunch generously sponsored by Josie Rowe-Setz. After lunch a hat will be passed round for donations to the Clifton School dressage arena. For more information contact Vicki Dillon at 083 303 0364.
