KZN weather high alert

2010-02-18 00:00

THE MEC for Co-operative Governance, Nomusa Dube, has issued a high alert for the province following a warning from the weather services that unusual weather patterns can be expected over the next three days.

Dube issued the warning following the death of three people who were struck by lightning during a thunderstorm that swept through the province on Tuesday night.

She has also activated all disaster management centres across the province to assess the extent of the damage and provide relief stock in the form of temporary shelter, medical assistance and food in cases where these are required by those affected.

The preliminary assessment of the storm damage indicates that Estcourt, Pietermaritzburg and Kokstad are among those areas affected.

She appealed to the affected people to contact provincial disaster management centres as well as municipalities so that they can be counted among the people who need help.

“Government departments such as Human Settlement, Social Development, Community Safety and Transport are among the partners as the Provincial Government ups the efforts to assist the affected communities,” she continued.

She said those who were affected and have not been reached by the disaster management team should make immediate contact with the Provincial Disaster Management Centre on 033 897 5627.
