KZN’s Alfie Cox thrilled with Dakar rally result

TRIUMPHANT is probably the closest description for South Africa’s Alfie Cox and his German co-driver Jürgen Schröder at the finish of the 2011 Personal Argentina Chile Dakar Rally.

Cox, who hails from KwaZulu-Natal, has finished five Dakar races on the podium with a second place overall in the motorcycle category in 2002, and was excited to receive his third “Finishers Badge” out of four attempts with a car. The pair finished this year’s event in 18th place overall.

“We are very happy to be here. The last few days were very, very tough.

“After the car overheated in the dunes and we had all the drama to get out, have it repaired, and got the massive time-penalties, we were forced to drive much slower than we would have preferred.

“We came here with the intention to finish in the top 10 and we were there quite a few times. If we did not have problems with the car, we could have been up there,” said Cox.

In next year’s Dakar, the team will race a Toyota pick-up powered by a Lexus engine. “This is not going to be a South African off-road car converted to a Dakar racer — it will be a dedicated Dakar vehicle that has the extra features required to assist one in competing in this special event,” explained Cox.

“Jürgen has given the go-ahead for the new car to be built and I am very excited to come back next year and drive a dedicated Dakar race machine,” he added.
