A FORMER Pietermaritzburg man has been appointed by President Jacob Zuma as board chairperson for the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA).

Zuma announced the new board yesterday and installed Yershen Pillay (29) as its leader.

Pillay, now living in Johannesburg, told Weekend Witness he was not expecting the post of chairperson.

“I thought I was going to be an ordinary member, but I am happy to be the chair.”

Pillay, who did not want to go into his plans for the agency, said he was to meet with his fellow members first.

Zuma, in a statement sent by his office, said: “We wish to warmly congratulate all the new members of the board and wish them all the best in pursuing the nation’s youth development agenda.”

The other members are: Xoliswa Ayanda Bambiso, Zandile Majozi, Mothupi Phaladi Modiba, Itiseng Kenny Morolong, Maropene Lydia Ntuli, and Nyalleng Potloane.

Morolong is deputy chairperson.

The members of the board are appointed for a period of three years.

Pillay was former deputy chairperson of the NYDA, the national chairperson of the Young Communist League and has served in the Human Resource Development Cou-ncil of South Africa.
