KZN's failing councils: MEC sets up team

2009-11-02 00:00

LOCAL Government MEC Nomusa Dube has set up an internal task team to urgently find a way to revive service delivery in various KZN municipalities.

In a press statement issued on Friday, Dube said the task team will work around the clock to enable her to report to the provincial cabinet on ways to turn poorly performing municipalities around.

Several municipalities have either failed dismally or are on the verge of collapse, prompting the MEC to step in as provided for in the Constitution and legislation, said the statement.

“The task team will deal with each of the municipalities as an individual as the challenges are distinct to each one of them.”

The step follows earlier attempts to assist struggling municipalities.

A few months ago, the department sent an administrator to Umhlabuyalingana, but this has not helped, the statement noted.

The provision of an accountant at the Umfolozi (Mbonambi) municipality has also not helped.
