KZN’s hockey girls gather in PMB to play in Joy Watt Provincial Tournament

2010-04-23 00:00

THE popular Joy Watt Provincial Girls’ Hockey Tournament takes place in Pietermaritzburg for the U16 and U19 age groups, from tomorrow to Monday.

The venues for tomorrow are Maritzburg College, GHS and AB Jackson Greenfields turf from 9 am to 5 pm.

On Sunday the matches are at the same venues, from 8 am through to 5 pm. Monday’s matches are at College, Epworth and St Johns from 7.30 am. The closing ceremony will be at College at 2 pm.

The U19A section includes last year’s winners, Umgungundlovu A (Pietermaritzburg), Pinetown, Sisonke, Vryheid, Umlazi and Umgungundlovu B.

The U19B section features the district teams from Othukela, Amajuba, Empangeni, Ugu and Umzinyathi.

The U16A section boasts teams from Umlazi A (last year’s winners), Umgungundlovu A, Pinetown A, Umgungundlovu B, Empangeni and Ugu.

The U16B section features Amajuba, Vryheid, Sisonke, Umgungundlovu C, Umlazi B and Pinetown B.

The Umgungundlovu U19A team includes four players from St Anne’s, Treverton and The Wykeham Collegiate, with two each from Voortrekker and Epworth. Coached by provincial captain Lyndal Robertson, the side should do well.

Umgungundlovu Girls’ Hockey chairperson Charmaine Koekemoer said GHS’s players could not be included in the side because the school’s first team are attending a tournament over the same weekend. Also, due to the SA U21 Women’s Inter-provincial Tournament at the AB Jackson Greenfields Turf next week, the time of the match between Voortrekker and Howick next Thursday has been changed to 5.30 pm at AB Jackson.

The Education Department’s co-curricular support services will assist with the hosting costs. Unfortunately, due to budget constraints, not all districts received assistance from the government, and parents had to foot the bill for accommodation, meals and transport.
