HER home is in Durban and she studies in Cape Town, but for Miss South Africa finalist Chanel Grantham Pietermaritzburg will always be a special place.

The 21-year-old beauty was born in the city and lived in Woodlands for a few years before her family relocated to Durban.

“Maritzburg is very close to our hearts,” she said. “My father worked at The Witness and we lived in Woodlands; it was a very happy time.”

Speaking to Weekend Witness between intense rehearsals for Sunday’s pageant, Grantham said she believed the show would be “spectacular.”

“We are practising hard and there is so much to do, I don’t even have time to be nervous!” she laughed. “But I’m sure the nerves will set in on Sunday,” she said.

Grantham is fairly new to the pageant world, having only entered one before Miss South Africa. “In 2009 I won Miss Earth SA and that was the first time I had actually done something like this,” she said.

Asked how she fits in full-time studying with the pressures of the pageant world and her modelling career, Grantham explained the timing for Miss South Africa was spot-on.

“I’m studying a BSc Property at UCT and I had finished up for the year when Miss South Africa rolled around. It was perfect,” she said. Although she spends most of her year in Cape Town, Grantham is adamant nothing beats KwaZulu-Natal.“I just love the great weather and the warm ocean; it’s something I really miss when I’m in Cape Town,” she said.

The 54th annual Miss South Africa pageant takes place at the Sun City Superbowl tomorrow at 5.30 pm.
