KZN's top councils: uMgeni and Ugu

2007-11-19 00:00

THE uMngeni local and Ugu District municipalities scooped the most awards at the 2007 Provincial Vuna Municipal Excellence awards ceremony on Friday and were crowned the Best Local and Best District municipalities in the province.

Ugu and uMngeni walked away with cheques for R750 000, leaving the nominees: Mbonambi, Richmond and uMnambithi local municipalities and the uThungulu District Municipality behind.

uThungulu District was the second runner-up and the uMnambithi Municipality came second, followed by the

Richmond Municipality third in the Local Municipality category.

MEC for Local Government, Housing and Traditional Affairs Mike Mabuyakhulu said that municipalities should try to master the provision of efficient services in water, sanitation, refuse removal and electricity as this allows municipalities to attract investment and grow the local economy.

“The provision of free basic services is a national priority that municipalities should implement in order to ensure that rights of residents are realised,” he said.

He said that in order to have well-groomed municipalities, they should focus on indigent groups so that communities can focus on skills for the mainstream economy.

While praising municipalities for submitting their annual financial statements and budgets on time, he mentioned that there is an urgent need to address the shortage of qualified managers and professional and technical personnel in many municipalities.

Ugu and uMngeni, alongside the eThekwini Metro, will represent KZN at the national Vuna awards on December 4 this year.
