A YOUNG man from the Caluza area was killed by irate community members on Monday evening in an incident of vigilante justice, after he was implicated in the rape and murder of a woman in the area on Monday morning.

Mongezi Ngcobo (19) was killed by community members after he was named as the main suspect in the rape and murder of Nomathemba Zuma (26).

Zuma was raped and killed by an intruder in the early hours of Monday morning. She was apparently hit on the forehead with a sharp weapon and her mouth was stuffed with rags.

Her sister Thabile Zuma, who was at home with her, pointed out a murder suspect to the community members.

She said that on Monday she was woken up by the smell of smoke that had filled the room.

She said when she went to the lounge “a man wearing a blue and green striped shirt appeared at the door and hit me till I fell on the ground, and then ran away”.

She said she then got up and went back to her friend in the bedroom to see if she was okay. She found her friend hiding in the wardrobe.

They hid till early in the morning then ran to inform neighbours. The neighbours searched the area and found her sister had been killed.

“She had an opening on her forehead and her mouth was stuffed with rags and she had been raped,” said Zuma.

She said she was able to identify the killer from his clothes and height.

“I did not see his face, but I knew him from the clothes he was wearing and his height. You can’t miss someone you know.”

However, Ngcobo’s brother, Smangaliso Msimang, who saw him being killed, disputed the claims, saying his brother was not a killer and rapist.

He said his brother was killed on the flimsiest of evidence. “They killed him because he owned a shirt similar to the one worn by the killer.”

Msimang said he watched helplessly while community leaders passed judgment that his brother be killed.

“They beat him to death with everything they could lay their hands on, including knobkerries and other weapons.”

Police spokesman Thulani Zwane confirmed Ngcobo was killed by community members on Monday for his alleged involvement in the murder and rape of Zuma.

He said no arrests have been made and the police are still investigating.
