Karkloof Canopy Tours celebrate 10 yrs

2013-09-14 00:00

IT was 10 years ago when the Karkloof Canopy Tours opened their doors — or rather their platforms — for adrenaline junkies.

But in the 10 years that have passed, this iconic adventure concept has become the domain of the ordinary person looking for fun and adventure.

Categorised as an adventure activity, it has attracted people from all walks of life and all ages wishing to experience the thrill of swooping through the treetops attached to the wires by a harness.

Kai Schulz, owner of the business, aims to promote the tours through the exposure to conservation. He believes that this up-close encounter with the magnificence of the Karkloof forest can only make tourists fall in love with the natural habitat.

“The canopy tour is a must-do for everyone, especially nature lovers or adventure seekers looking to do something unique.”

During this adventure you can expect to hear the calls of the Samango monkey, or spot the elusive Nirina Trogon if you are able to focus while standing on the platforms between the thrilling slides.

The KZN attraction has lured many celebrities and overseas visitors. It has also been featured on television as a top tourist attraction.

Local celebs like Minky van der Westhuizen and Pat Lambie have experienced the thrill, and even a 90-year-old tempted fate and survived.

Some experience it every day — three of the original canopy guides — Africa Madonda, Walter Dladla and Moses Mabaso, still work there.

The complex system of slides and platforms was designed and constructed by Tree Top Tours, the creators of the internationally acclaimed Tsitsikamma Canopy Tour on the Garden Route. It took eight months to complete the construction of the canopy tour.

At the outset, an environment impact study was undertaken to ensure that the forest ecology would not be harmed in any way.

Visitors to the Karkloof Canopy Tours this weekend will receive a 30% discount off the full price.
